Medicaid is a government-sponsored health insurance program designed to assist low-income individuals and families with medical expenses. Medicaid is a Florida state and Federal partnership that provides health coverage for Florida residence with a lower income status. Its purpose is to improve the health of people who might otherwise go without medical care for themselves and their family.
To be eligible for Florida Medicaid, you must be a resident of the state of Florida, a U.S. national, citizen, permanent resident, or legal alien, in need of health care/insurance assistance, who are categorized as low income or very low income. You must also be one of the following:
- Pregnant, or
- Be responsible for a child 18 years of age or younger, or
- Blind, or
- Have a disability or a family member in your household with a disability, or
- Be 65 years of age or older.
To sign up for the Pinellas County Health Program, you must complete an online application. Commonly required documents include proof of income, identification documents, Social Security numbers, and information about household members. Requirements may include:
- Your Social Security number
- You date of birth
- Proof of identity
- Proof of citizenship
- Income verification, which can include (but is not limited to) income from a job or self-employment, child support or alimony payments, pensions, etc.
- A list of your expenses for housing, utilities, a business or self-employment, food, clothing, etc.
- Information on any assets such as bank accounts, investments, trust funds, vehicles, property, or life/health insurance.
